This is a classic and very simple hemp protein shake which has a delicious, natural sweetness and the richness of a chocolate milkshake. To ensure your smoothie is extra sweet, use bruised and overripe frozen bananas.
Why it’s good for you
Most people know that bananas are an excellent source of potassium, but they are also a great source of magnesium and dietary fibre. Bananas can give you a huge burst of energy in the mornings or before a workout and the prebiotics and fibres in them can help keep your digestion and stomach flora healthy.
Maca powder is one of my favourite ingredients to add to protein smoothies. It has a signature earthy, malt-like flavour which can increase energy, blood flow and mood. Maca powder is high in antioxidants and full of iron, copper and vitamin C. Maca also balances hormone levels and improves libido.
I use almond milk in this smoothie because it has a light, sweet flavour. You can either make your own almond milk, which will have a stronger almond flavour and higher nutritional content, or you can buy it pre-made. Almond milk is full of minerals and vitamins such as calcium and riboflavin.
2 tbs hemp protein
1 cup almond milk
1 frozen ripe banana
1 tbs maca powder
2 tbs raw cacao powder
- Blend all ingredients together until smooth
- Serve immediately or freeze in a plastic bottle
for later. Defrost 2 hours before drinking.
